How I Feel About This Section of ENC1101!!!!!!!!

As some of you may know, I have trouble writing in general. I usually miss a word or have bad sentence structure. I think this class is definitely a start of I can improve my writing on my own. I think the workshop groups do help a lot because you are getting help from different viewpoints and people who have variety of experiences that you may or may not have had yet. I also I think our teacher is very "down-to-earth" (I actually properly used a hyphen properly). She knows what we're going through and knows how to teach the lessons in very chilled manner. I never thought that I would be calling our teacher by her first name. College is so different from high school in the way English gets taught (or at least in this class/university).

I enjoy that we as a class bring something different to class. For example, Ryan being so obsessed with Fight Club, and Connor with his interesting ideas (i.e. turning the chairs around today in class). It is also great that we can meet different people that our not in our major. I find this a great way to be able to network with people in the future (you never know who will reappear in your life).

So in general, I am enjoying the class. I hope I can make some really nice friendships in this class. Although, I do think our teacher is can be critical. But I know she has to be so that we can become better writers.

  1. Well I can definitely admit that this class is kicking me in the butt big time. For the last three years (10th, 11th, 12th grade) I've had challenging english teachers. But college is so fast-paced and after awhile, it feels like things are just piling up on you without even knowing they were assigned. It becomes very hectic and you can't even think about normal functioning activities because you are so worried you're forgetting an assignment in English and you can't fail this class. It's very tough.

  2. I agree with you. I love our class environment. I normally would dread the walk to English class but now its not so bad. I get to go hang out with friends for an hour and a half and talk about sometimes interesting things. Minus the pop quizzes, the class is not that bad. My roommate hates waking up at 12 to go to his ENC class. He says they just sit in silence while the teacher blabs on a bout something pointless. They have no interaction with each other or the teacher. Having a more relaxed class allows me to retain more information from it because we always relate stuff to our own lives.

  3. I like our English class. Unlike my other classes, which have large numbers or students, we can interact with each other during lessons and activities. its nice hearing what other people have to say and getting chance to read their papers. hopefully the rest of the semester keeps going great for everyone.

  4. I honestly love this class. I look forward to going to this class every Tuesday and Thursday. At first I thought I would hate this class for being mandatory but I'm not. Even if it wasnt mandatory I would come to class everyday. I love that we are able to just say how we really feel about things. I also love our teacher. She isnt ridiculously strict or boring. I learn a lot from this class and it is really helping with my writing. Which I know that I have a lot of trouble with as well. Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed but it's college. Everyone will get overwhelmed every once in a while.

  5. This is my favorite class because of the environment. It is my only small class and I love getting to know everyone. The class has also surprisingly become the class I have to put the most work into to get a good grade. I have never been the strongest writer but I could usually get an A- on my paper with little effort. This class has definitely changed that but it is also improving my writing a lot. I just hope it improves enough so I can pull off an A- in the class.

  6. I am enjoying this class as well. I learn something new everyday and I am amused by the comments and activities we have in class every single day. I am also really improving on my writing. I was a bit disappointed in my first paper, but I feel as if there is much room for improvement. I am continuing to learn new things everyday such as improving my grammer, sentence structure, editing, etc. I am really looking forward to continue to improve as an English student and continue to improve my grade.

  7. I love our class! I like how we are learning but we're having fun doing it. I think it helps that we all respect Ms. Ahmed so that she can play around with us and know that we won't take advantage of that. How many teachers walk in with random items and give them to the first kid that answers her random question. I also really enjoy our story times and attendance questions. We have some very creative and funny people in our class. This is one of the few classes that I have this semester that I enjoy going to. I never thought I would say that about an English class.

  8. Apart from all my music classes, this class is my favorite. I love the fact that everyone gets along so well and it's such a chill atmosphere. I really don't mind going at all...that is until I get there and realize there's a pop quiz. I really like how Ms.Ahmed teaches us and even the little attendance question is neat. I think it definitely gets the class involved and breaks the ice(not like there is any). Although, when it comes to writing our essays, sometimes I feel like I'm writing my absolute best but still get "B-" on the essay. Idk how I'm gonna fix this but I think we should be graded a little bit easier...considering that all my other friends who have this class are getting "A's" on all of their papers.

  9. I enjoy our english class as well because it is extremely small and allows everyone to talk and share their work. In the larger classes it is just dead silent and there are no fun comments or one on one discussions. Our teacher is extremely chill and understands that we as teenagers need lessons like she gives, rather than boring lectures, in order to understand the material. The workshops that are held in class are also extremely helpful and help me think of new ideas and expand my paper, as well as restrict myself from putting in too much or incorrect grammar.

  10. I agree with you! I love our class. The point you made about everyone having something to offer is so true. It is really nice that the class is so small because we have become close. I have another class that has 500 students in it and I don't know any of them. We are like a little family in ENC1101. I like getting to know everyone so well and growing together with our writing. I think that Ms. Ahmed is a very good teacher even though I wish we didn't have so many pop quizzes!!!

  11. I really like our class! All my other classes are really large, with the smallest at around 175 people. While I don't mind the other classes, our class is always entertaining and I think it is due to the class size. Larger classes can be incredibly boring. I think it is because the professor only wishes to teach a lesson and you have to care or be interested in order to pay attention, and take notes. It is our responsibility to learn, but it is much easier to do so in a class that is entertaining. I also like peer editing. At my school we did not do that, so when i heard that there would be numerous eyes on my paper I grew very scared. I had rarely let anyone read my papers, but now I am more drawn to let others read over my written work., because of how helpful peer editing has been. When i had signed up for this class I did not plan on learning anything, and my goal was to just get through it. Looking back my thoughts seem silly because I can already see my writing improving, and I would not trade that.

  12. I think it's so refreshing to have a class of this size. My other classes have between 200-500 students in them. You really get a chance to get to know one another. It's like being in high school again. This class does tend to stress me out sometimes. Like today for example, I left all of the reading, blog comments, and redoing my first paper till right now. And I have a test to study for tomorrow! It's my own fault though for procrastinating. Anyways I'm not used to all the workshopping that we do. I have to admit that it is really helpful and you get to see what your peers wrote about too. Overall I really enjoy this class.

  13. I think that having trouble writing is something that everyone goes through... But our class does seem to make it easier and more fun. We always have fun and Miss Ahmed really makes us feel loved. The homework can be somewhat overwhelming, but that doesn't really stop me from thinking of this as one of my favorite classes. This is the only class where I can be friends with almost everyone in it, especially at such an early time of the year. I really just feel at home when I go to this class. I'm not afraid to express myself because everyone already has an idea of who I am.

  14. This english class is by far my favorite class. I love that our class is small and that we all have become so close. It made it a lot easier for me to ransomer to the college life. The rest of my classes are HUGE and I know like no one in them, but this class reminds me of high school and t makes me so happy! I too love how down to earth our teacher is. She's perfect! I have a lot of fun in the class. It is honestly the only class where i am not bored out of my mind!

  15. I definitely like our class due to our mixture of personalities. Everybody keeps class interesting; not to mention Miss Ahmed involves everyone in the classroom. It is nice to be in a small class because everyone bonds with each other. In my bigger classes everyone just keeps to themselves. As for workshops I enjoy them too. Every time we do them I believe that I receive constructive criticism. English class has undoubtedly been a positive experience for me so far.

  16. I guess I’m going to be the one who points it out. You totally had a huge typo right when you were talking about your writing improving in sentence 3. “I think this class is definitely a start of I can improve my writing on my own.” It was a good effort though. Also, thanks for the shout-out! On a more serious note I’m definitely with you about how awesome our class and how everyone seems to bring their own bit of spunk to the class. This is definitely one of my favorite classes (right up there with economics cause I’m a huge econ geek!) primarily because of the friends I’ve made and the laid back environment. Yeah it’s a lot of work but it doesn’t seem like a lot of pressure. We get four drafts to fix all our mistakes and I really like that. I don’t sit around fretting about my first draft not being perfect because I know I’m going to get awesome feedback from my classmates! I think this class is really helping my writing grow.

  17. i agree that we have an awesome class environment. We have a small class and all get along really well for the most part. We are able to talk about pretty much anything which i think is really cool because all of my other classes we either don't talk to one another really or the class has three or four hundred people in it. We are all slowly getting to know more and more about one another each class and i hope we all get to be in the same english class next semester as well.

  18. to be fair, you all keep bringing up Fight Club, not me... but I can definitely agree with the teacher being awesome. Maybe because shes so young she actually understands college life in the modern era. Most of our professors went to school long ago when the worst thing out there was LSD or syphilis. Now there's a thousand STDs, a garbage bag full of drugs, and a million ways to procrastinate all around us. I feel she does a good job of keeping thing real.

  19. I think this class is pretty awesome in all honesty. It's small, almost like the size of a high school class, so we get to know the majority of the class as apposed to just one or two students. Also, it allows us to find people in our other classes. For example, there are at least 4 of us in Fati's class who share macroeconomics with me. I would have never known that had I not been in this comm class. As far as the work is concerned, I can't stand reading. Like at all. So the homework is really tedious in my eyes, but I think the actual classroom experience makes up for the lack of interest in homework.

  20. I agree that this English class is different than any other one i have ever taken. But it is a good thing. I like all my english teachers but this class is so unique. It's amazing. In every other class i have, there are like 500 kids. In here i pretty much know everyone and it is great. This class also has helped me become a better writer and enjoy it. Our teacher is great and she is by far one of the best i have had.
