A Day Made of Glass

I couldn't get the video to show up on the blog, so here's the link:
http://youtu.be/6Cf7IL_eZ38

So, my grandmother is one of those who sends me so many e-mails to the point where I almost want change my e-mail address. But today, when I logged on, I saw only one. The subject line read "The Future in Glass." Of course, I just checked the box next to it and scrolled my mouse up to the delete button, but someting stopped me before I had the chance to click. I was curious. There are so many people who come up with concepts of what the future may be like. Hell, every time there's a new technologial advancement, it's seems like people jump on it and assume that it will be necessary for living in the future. So of course when I started watching this video, I was skeptical.

The video suggests that upcoming generations will be taking advantage of the integration of technology into our everyday lives. Virtually every surface has the potential to become a touchscreen, with the ability to push and retrieve vital data in order to assist us with tedious tasks. This has the potetnial to make all of our iPads, tablets, desktops, and laptops obsolete. Quite frankly I think it's fascinating to see what we may be able to do very soon. Mind you, this is purely conceptual as it stands right now. However more recent breakthroughs suggest that this portrayal is not pure fantasy, it's possibility.

All of this leaves me wondering though: Are we too concerned with the future that we neglect the present? Do we dwindle on what the next big thing is so much that we soon forget the last? It just worries me to see that all of our "specialists" are too busy speculating on how the world will be rather than how it is. How do you all feel about this?

  1. That video does look like the future to me. I am amazed how technology can grow like that. I want to be able to have that technology soon. I am skeptical how soon it will come. I thought that gas less car would be on the market now. But that hasn't happened yet. This blog post is one of my favorites because although it has nothing to do with our class, it still has meaning to our class. We as a class are growing and getting new ideas in our essays. You can compare that similarly to technological advancements.

  2. I've seen this video before. It is so cool. I hope stuff is like this in the future. I think its good to move towards the future. If you stay in the past you have to deal with lots of painful and bad memories. If you look towards the future you can be more prepared for your life. I think part of inventing all of this new stuff is planning for it. Now that they have this idea and concept, they can start working towards it. Maybe make a model house or something. It’s kind of like writing our essays. We draft and draft till we work on the final piece. I think it’s real important to look to the future so we can kind of expect certain things. Do you guys agree that looking towards the future helps plan things out?

  3. You will not see me complaining about my iphone or my mac laptop but at what point is enough, enough? Do we really need touch screen for everything? Yes, in some aspects you could argue it would help for certain things, but our society is becoming more and more lazy. We can look up almost any information we need in a matter of seconds. Kids today are spending a lot more time inside on computers and high-tech video games instead of playing outside. I am honestly scared of what technology will be like when I have kids. I don't want my kids to grow up on the computer and playing games 24/7.

  4. Wow that video was pretty cool but its a little weird lol. I agree with Alexis, people just get lazier and lazier every day. There is so much technology that practically spoils us and makes simple tasks 10 times simpler. Mark, I liked how you related this to our drafts. planning and looking into the future whether its years or just days is always good. It prepares you for any obstacles and pretty much keeps you on your feet. I hope i can live long enough to see crazy stuff like this become part of everyone's life, but i also hope we don't completely destroy ourselves with the technology we create.

  5. It looks cool but honestly, i think it isn't that good of an idea. It pushes us to be lazy. I hate that technology is doing everything for us. I don't really like the computer except for music. I could live without it though. It is crazy to see people get phones every two months because a "better version" comes out. It is okay if people are helped out by technology, but not if it takes over our daily lives. It is sad that a person must be computer savvy for everything, especially jobs. This world is becoming even lazier by the minute.

  6. The future in glass seems pretty awesome. I thought some things were really cool like the whole window blackout thing, while others seemed kinda ridiculous, like when she was shopping. I also do not thing that this will be happening in the near future, since we haven't seen technological advancements yet that were promised to arrive years ago. I agree that we will likely become more lazy, yet in the same sense we may become more motivated to discover the technological advancement. Of course, there is a point where we should know to stop and just enjoy what we have rather than looking for the next-big-thing. Sometimes we need to stop trying to improve our future and instead improve our world today.

  7. That video was pretty cool. If the future did end up like that it could definitely be interesting, especially considering what you said, that it is now not just a fantasy, but maybe even actually possible. Some people now are focused on the present, but a lot of people who are really into technology are probably mostly focused on what is going to come next. They think what they have now is cool and all, but they still think there is something that could come out that is even better. I think people should be satisfied with what they have now and just take the future as it comes. Obviously some people have to focus on the future in order to create it, but that is mostly the younger generations jobs. I am excited to see what the future has in store, but I am also trying to enjoy my present the best I can right now.

  8. Wow that was one of the coolest videos I have seen in a while. I thought how all the touch screens were seamlessly integrated was amazing. It was so cool how one could put their phone on the counter or near a map and the information seamlessly would transfer. However I do think we become too hyped up for the next iPhone, iPad, or whatever new piece of technology. While I think it is all cool plus it creates new industries It may teach kids not to appreciate their things. Why would you appreciate your phone if the next one comes out next year. With that being said I still look forward to the future.

  9. It honestly freaks me out sometimes when I think about the future. We look back at the generations before us, like when they didn't have air conditioner, and we have a hard time understanding how they survived. In a hundred years are our great grand kids going to question how we survived? I'm sure there will be some crazy creations in the next twenty years let alone 100. I think it is interesting to see how things change. For example when I was in about 5th grade I remember my best friend's older sister wasn't allowed to get a cell phone till she was 16 and now there are 6 year olds with cell phones. Its weird.

  10. That video was awesome. I believe technology like that will be available one day, it is just a matter of when. And yes it trump our iPhone's, iPads, etc etc. Personally i think some people are way to caught up in the future, but i try my best not to let myself get too caught up in it. I like to live for now because there are no promises for tomorrow. i think the more technologically advanced we get the more efficient we will get at the same time, which to me i don't really see any down sides to being more efficient.

  11. I thought that video was really neat! I really do think that the world will be like that one day. People like convenience. I don't think that this necessarily means that we are lazy it just means that life will be more efficient and we will have time for other things. I think it is great how the world keeps becoming more advanced. We are able to do so many more things and explore new places. I think that when people are negative about about new technology, they are not accepting what is meant to be.

  12. Honestly I think it all comes down to the person. Our generation is much more materialistic than our parents generation. The culture that we have been brought up in taught us to always want the best of the best and strive for the bestEST. Since this is part of our nature, there is always higher expectations, and so companies (tech specifically) cater to our needs. This world is also all about competition for consumers so competition for advancement will never cease.

  13. I read a quote the other week, that really changed me as a person. It stated that instead of looking everything in the future and rushing through life. That life should be lived day by day to the best of your ability. When people begin to look ahead that is when they lose the true understanding of life. Life is precious to be taken for granted. So it should be taken one day at a time, living life to the fullest.

  14. You actually bring up a good point. It's so ridiculous when you go out and buy an iPhone4, bring it home and get all excited while your figuring out how to work it, just to find out that they came out with the iPhone 5 already. It seems like every time you buy one thing, you have to save up money to buy the "upgraded" version of it! I think our generation is blessed, quite frankly, to have grown up in the technological era. This will provide us with higher paying jobs in the future :) Just listen to this crap. My niece is two years old. She always plays with my step-mom's Ipad. She knows it so much better than my step-mom that she can even download apps now and open them up to play...a TWO YEAR OLD who can hardly say the alphabet perfectly can open up the app store and press install...it's incredible what the next generations are capable of. I can only imagine the future....

  15. Wow, that is pretty fascinating! I've never seen anything like that before but it doesn't surprise me that there is something like that. I think our generation is getting too consumed with technology. I mean yeah it's awesome, I have a 4G iPhone and I love it! But in the video, I thought it was a bit much when the woman was brushing her teeth and she had to respond to an email...like why can't she just brush her teeth and be done with it? I think if something were to come out like that for the public, I it would be way too time consuming. I think our generation doesn't spend a lot of time with each other because we spend so much time with our technology. It's funny because even at family gatherings for holidays, all of my cousins will be in the living room and mostly everyone is on their phone or playing a video game...Our parents usually get annoyed because they feel like we never talk to each other. I would love to break the habit but unfortunately for me, it's super hard because I love my phone and it helps in awkward situations..lol.

  16. I think at some point, technology i going to become more of a burden than a blessing. Dont get me wrong, I love my Xbox and my phone and whatnot, but I feel like the natural world suffers because of the expansion of technology. I dont know if it just me, ut I'd rather be out walking on a few acres of land than with a flatscreen in from of me. The natural world just seems to be better than anything we can make or imagine ourselves.

  17. I want to live there. If that has any chance of being in the future I want to freeze myself like Walt Disney did so I can be alive to see it! Okay now I’m just being crazy, but seriously that’s so cool! But anyways no I don’t think we’re too concerned about the future. If we were too concerned with the future we wouldn’t be having all these intellectual breakthroughs today. However with that said I think you made an awesome point about forgetting about the past too quickly. It is crazy how quickly people forget about what happened so recently whether it’s from an informational standpoint, technological, or anything else. An example is people were freaking about “global cooling” and the next ice age that was inevitable. This was about thirty years ago. Now people completely forgot about this and freak about about global warming. I guess what I’m trying to say is no I don’t think we obsess about the future too much, but yes I do think we forget about the past too quickly.

  18. I thought the video was really cool. This concept seems more realistic than the other inventions of the future. I think companies like Apple literally make a new product and then go back to the drawing board to make it even better. Some people have to have the latest in technology. People will even buy the upgraded product when they only had the one before it for a couple of months. I think all the hype about everytime the iphone has an upgrade is ridiculous. People literally camp out in front of the store the day it comes it out just so they can be the first to have one. Technological advances are nice, but sometimes we just over do it.

  19. I actually saw that video in one of my classes senior year. It is such an interesting video. I honestly believe that one day we will live like those people in the video. I dont think it is a bad thing that we obsess over the future. Hell, thats the only thing we can control. So of course we do nothing but work towards it. That's what we are doing here in school; working for a future. Sometimes we do forget about the past pretty quick but does it really matter? I mean, its the past, you cant fix it or change it, so why dwell on it?
