Perspective

Its crazy to me how someone can tell you a story and then someone can tell you the same EXACT story and it can be completely different. I never understood why the same story could be so different. In this weeks reading about the "sketchy" guy in the alley, I really got to see this. We could debate for hours on who his audience is but we can never truly know unless we ask the author. He could be writing to his own kind or he could be writing to the "scarred white people.” Every reader can have a different view of the story. In class we could not even agree on one audience. I think because of everyone’s past we all view stories differently. When we have our own individual life experiences, we form our own way of thinking. When we hear a story, we unconsciously apply our style of thinking to it by the way we process it in our brain. Someone could here a story about someone who slipped and fell and laugh and then someone can hear the same story and want to cry. I’m exaggerating a bit there but you guys get the idea. When I hear stories about clowns I know I get terrified because I hate clown but some people love them so they interpret it in a more happy and silly way. I don’t understand how, their creepy, ugly, and not funny at all. Anyways, points of view our important. They create a person’s beliefs and help form a person’s idea. If George Washington didn’t have his own views where would our country be today? What is Ms. Ahmeds mugger didn’t have his views of weapons, it could’ve been a lot worse. Out views are our own and they can be as private as we want them to be.

  1. I agree that we form our opinions based on what we know. That is probably the only way we make our opinions. That mugger story was sooooooooooooooooo hilarious. The way Fati told story made it even better. I am literally making an opinion while talking about opinion because I just used prior knowledge. I do think that guy's audience could be both. There are many perspectives to view any story.

  2. I agree that a lot of the opinions we form are based on our past experiences. I think a lot of them have to do with the way we are raised. For example if you are brought up in a really racist family you will most likely view the story about a "sketchy black guy" differently than someone who views all races equally. I feel bad sometimes when I watch young people act a certain way because a lot of how you act is taught to you by your parents.

  3. As we talked in class about who could be the audience of the story, we found it extremely difficult to come to a conclusion as a group of people. We all have our own individual perspectives, beliefs, and opinions about things and sometimes we find it hard to stand in someone else's shoes. I like how you put in a persona example about how you believe that clowns are scary and don't understand how people can see them as fun and friendly. I also liked how you mentioned George Washington. Every leader we have had, has their own opinions and without those we wouldn't be where we are today, bad or good.

  4. For one, kudos for quoting scared white people :P And secondly I can definitely agree to what you have said. I thought it was funny how easy it was for both sides arguing who the story was written for to make valid and strong points. Its almost as if it were written just for this arguments sake. Its sometimes hard to distinguish these ideas because we often force the writer to, in a way, speak more from our point of view.

  5. I agree completely. Your point of view is everything. No two people are alike and therefore we all have our own beliefs. That is what makes life so interesting. If we all interpreted stories the same way, what would be the point of english? I love that people see the world differently! It makes arguing so much more fun!

  6. i think that is what makes reading so beautiful and powerful; being able to exercise our own interpretations and ideas. Notice how the bet movies are the ones that let us decide how it ends. It may be annoying for most people but it lets us be creative and use or own ideals. I do think choosing who the audience was for the story we read build down to nature and nurture: Not only how we were brought up but also our experiences, morals, how we were brought up, our views, etc.

  7. It was amazing how differently people can view the same issue, conversation, and really anything! I always find myself blabbing to my friends about how much I love a particular TV show, or how awesome a band is and all my friends look at me like I'm crazy! I guess it just goes to show that everyone views everything in a completely unique way and you can really never tell how someone else is going to interpret something you say.

  8. i agree with you! different views make up almost everything in our daily lives. the choices we make, the people we hang out with, the political party we like etc. The way we interpret stories is always gonna be different, whats funny to some is not to others. I really liked your clown example lol, very clever.

  9. Everyone does view things differently based on their life experiences. I notice this alot when I relay stories that my friends tell me to my other friends. I'm telling them what they told me but in a completely different way. Then when they finally here the story from the source they always tell me it was different from what I had originally told them. I guess this is because certain details are more important to me than others which I think differs from person to person. I think this is why we all have different likes and dislikes, it's all based on our preferences and what we can personally relate to.

  10. This blog post is extremely accurate. A person's past definitely plays a significant role in how we view things or situations in the present. A bad experience can completely alter a perspective towards anything. For example a person who got mugged while in New York might have bad attitudes towards visiting there opposed to a person who grew up there with fond memories to share. Our past affects us in more ways than we realize.

  11. Everyone has their own opinion or point of view that is why some stories can be exactly the same yet portrayed in a completely different manner. Everyone views things differently which can change the mood or point of view and even the tone of the story. People can also get a different interpretation on things which can also turn things around. Everyone has the right to their own opinion or view and that's the beauty of literature.

  12. Perspective is key. In a way, perspective is what makes us human. If we did not cling to our perspective and individuality we would most likely end up like the Stepford Wives or robots. A world without perspective would likely be a world without conflict, but it would be a very stale and unoriginal world. I agree that our past, and how we were raised plays a huge role in our perspective but I also think that our perspective can change instantly with the help of another's perspective.

  13. Your past definitely makes you interpret things differently than other people, but i think it has to mainly do with how you are raised. I completely agree with you when you say that subconsciously when you hear a story you automatically interpret it in your own way, rather than from another persons point of view. When it comes to have a discussion about a topic (NOT an argument, a discussion) you must be able to back away form your point of view and look at everyone else's point of view. If you do this and then actually contemplate the multiple different points of view then you are reasoning logically. If you aren't able to do this, then you mine as well just stop talking because i promise you that the discussion will go absolutely nowhere.

  14. I actually loved this blog. It's so true. When everyone coming to different conclusions to the purpose and meaning of a story, that's when it truly is great. In films and books, when perspective changes a story, the plot truly thickens like a warm soup. Perspective is like the seasoning, though. You can't just make it up. It comes along with a good story.

  15. I completely agree with this blog. We all interpret things differently and it truly explains our diffferent personalities. Each story, book, and movie that we read or watch give everyone a different end thought, or perspective. One person could love a movie or book because of one character or scene, but another could hate that said book or movie because of that exact character or scene. It really all depends on that persons culture and life experiences. Just like what Ms. Ahmed said about that one story about Hawaii. The natives would interpret that story as a true and honestly written story, but others like us possible tourists would think that the story is rude. That just shows how different we all are and how powerful one piece of literature can be.

  16. I agree with you. Our perspective on everything is unique to any other persons'. Even if we agree with someone on something, it most likely is for a different reason. One person can like a book for a certain reason and other people can hate that book for that same reason. Another person can like the book though for a completely different reason based on their own point of view. We all have been raised differently and have our own opinions on everything.

  17. Yeah I agree with you. Perspective plays a huge role in pretty much everything. The way you tell a story, the way you judge people, hell even the way you act towards people. Mrs Ahmed's mugger thought he saw an innocent little girl that was an easy target, little did he know that she had "vicious man-eating monsters" that were about to attack him. But little did he REALLY know that they just wanted to lick his face and be played with. If he were telling the story, it would probably have gone a lot differently compared to how mrs ahmed told it. It's crazy how much is altered when you put a little perspective into something.

  18. Point of view is a key factor when interpreting a story. I'm constantly stuck in the middle of two of my friends who constantly bicker about the dumbest things. I can never hear one side of the story, because then I would subconsciously be forced to side with that person, because the way they convey an occurrence makes them seem innocent, whereas the other story would make them seem guilty. I'm learning that you really have to consider all viewpoints before you develop an opinion on something
